International Ministry at First

As the radio has shared, Calgary is at the heart of Western Canada, and the gate of the Rocky Mountains. When many people of different ethnicities become Calgarians, they have made up a major part of Calgary’s population increase over the past several years. While Calgary is developing into an international city, First Baptist Church of Calgary (First) has been growing into an intentionally multi-ethnic congregation.

Having been put in the heart of the Belt Line Area which is also the heart of Downtown Calgary, First has been working hard to help people from afar.  For new arrivals, language skills are one of the barriers that prevent them from fully enjoying their new lives. First is one of the earliest organizations to provide free evening ESL courses.  Volunteers from our church come every Wednesday and Thursday evening to teach the Bible, Canadian culture, and talk freely with their new friends.

More than that, Jesus’ love in our hearts shows us that loving our neighbour, especially those who immigrate from other countries, is the best way to put our Bible based Christian faith into daily practice. So we invite these new Canadians into our home to enjoy Canadian food and share with them how to make our respective cuisines. We share Canadian festivals together, and go hiking in Kananaskis. Being our friends, new immigrants even have the chance to be invited to spend a weekend on a farm of Canadian style; riding a combine during harvest season, or shooting a hunting gun in the winter.

We believe that the Lord has put us in this place for a purpose.  Working with our Lord, we believe that First will become a community from every nation, tribe, people and language (Rev 7:9). Christians from a variety of nations would worship Christ and share the eternal hope together at First.
